There are plenty of different ballroom shoes in the market today, some of which are geared towards specialized dancing such as Latin, Tango and Salsa, whereas most are geared towards multi-use. Some ballroom shoes have pointed tips with open toes, which are quite popular for women dancers, whilst others are completely closed and more suitable for men.

The simplest of ballroom shoes for women are the high heeled ones, which can be found at any dancewear store! Ballroom shoes which have high heels are ideal for those forms of dance that have lots of fast pivoting and swiveling turns as well of those dance types that need inherent grace as par for the course! Some women are quite tall and tend to dwarf their partners with high heeled ballroom shoes. This is why even low-heeled ballroom shoes have come into the market, and are designed to provide the same functionality as high heeled ballroom shoes!

For amateur and professional dancers who are men, similar requirements of ballroom shoes are now in place. The main factor that featured for male ballroom shoes was style and sophistication. However, as the forms of dance evolve, so do ballroom dance shoes. In this day and age, the look of the shoe should count for only half of its purpose, the other main purpose being durability! This is because male shoes wear out faster, since men not only lead, but also hold up their dance partners in most ballroom dance steps.

Ballroom dance shoes made for men tend to be very flexible and are usually created from black leather. They have low heels designed for revolving and pivoting turns which prevent male dancers from slipping or falling, especially in dance competitions. They also lend a look of supreme elegance and exoticism to the dance!

For ease in performing all the Terpsichore turns and moves in the dance competition, comfort and ease of movement is essential. Therefore, before opting to buy your ballroom shoes, ensure that they match with your outfit as well as all the above specifications!

Ballroom dancing has a lot of benefits, most of which are physical whilst a few are psychological. Let us look at the various benefits of ballroom dancing:

1. Flexibility: When you start off with ballroom dancing, your joints and muscles feel quite stiff. As time passes and you continue your ballroom dancing regime, you will start to feel a difference in your body. It becomes looser, and bends more easily to the different steps in ballroom dancing! This is because your blood circulation becomes easier and muscles tone up. Hence, even when you get older, you’ll be able to pick up stuff you’ve dropped with no problems at all!

2. Social Atmosphere: Ballroom dancing is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. Sometimes, you may even meet your life partner out there on the dance floor! A shared smile and a bit of confidence can really take you places!

3. Exercise: Ballroom dancing is the ideal way to burn calories and manage your weight and have fun simultaneously! It’s definitely more fun than trying to lose weight in a gym!

4. Body Toning: Dancing is a great way to tone up the body!

5. Posture Awareness: Dancing increases confidence, as well as posture! After all, posture is one of the most important factors of ballroom dancing. Any dancing coach will tell you to stand straight and avoid looking at the floor! If you use the same advice in your normal life, you may just find yourself having a perfect posture ALL the time!

6. Confidence: As mentioned before, dancing drastically improves confidence! If you know that you can dance well in public, this will give you confidence to actually do so and thus enable you to try out the new things in life that you have never before dared to venture into!

7. Improved Balance: The right positions and posture for ballroom dancing ensure that you learn how to spread your weight in a manner that will ensure that you improve you inner balance. And before you know it, you’ll also be walking the tightrope!

Prior to this, a huge number of these individuals did not even have an interest in ballroom dance. Nowadays, with learn to ballroom dance DVDs instructions, it is easy for individuals to learn various techniques of ball room dances, at their own pace and in the comfort of their own homes. There are many ballroom dances that you can choose depending on the form of dance styles, moves, techniques and methods that interest you and your level of skill. It does not matter if you are a seasoned dancer or a novice seeking to be taught and master new dance styles for your next competition.

You can begin ballroom dancing merely as an exciting, new and fun pastime or as a sport involving participating in a ballroom dance competition or you can use it as a way of exercise completely different from the normal gym workouts most people engage in. The ballroom dance floor is open to anyone with interest and is continually growing, so it is up to you to decide. This is what makes ballroom dancing very interesting and fun. This dance is never boring since at any time you can learn something new, a new technique or new step to master. You will even have a chance to meet some wonderful people from every sphere of society who, like you, have discovered the excitement of this dance and majority of whom started rather innocently by buying, studying, watching, practicing and learning, using one or many ballroom dance video programs or instruction DVDs.

Though in general ballroom dancing is composed of many various dancing styles, the two major defining styles are the American and the International Style. What makes ballroom dancing a fascinating and interesting activity when watching it or participating in it, even though you are starting to learn dancing using the learn to ballroom dance DVDs, is the diversity brought to it.

<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-132" title="Learn & Master Guitar Dvd Course! The Standard Style with dances such as the Slow Foxtrot and Waltz is characterized with a more formal mode of dressing with women wearing stylish costumes gowns while men wear tuxedos like tails and vests. The Latin Style with dances such as Cha Cha, Samba and Rhumba is largely defined by sensual music and tight fitting attires for the men, while those for ladies are known for showing more of the skin. This is exactly why you should make a point of checking some inexpensive learn to ballroom dance DVDs or how-to video programs so you can see for yourself what ballroom dancing has to offer.

Realistically speaking, if both your feet are left sided, when it comes to dancing you should make a point of learning ballroom dancing on DVD online. You probably desire to learn the common moves and this is making you feel frustrated because you are just not able to dance. You have therefore decided to stick to the taprooms filled with smoke and rock clubs that are also limited to this type of scenario.

It would be a good thing for you to accept the fact that you really want to learn about salsa and Cha Cha and with time you may even consider knowing how to waltz. You think about going for dance lessons at a studio. The studios include nominal fee in their charges while others require you to sign a contract for a specific duration of time. Not to mention the dance instructor, who could turn out to be a college uberhappy or social butterfly that does not put any value to your time or it could also be a snob who is super experienced and is only good at looking down upon you and you will find this to not only be a waste of your money but is also a mock made on your face.

Another thing that may be a hindrance to you is the fact that some dancing classes are taught in a couple setting. This means that you must bring in a partner or be forced to dance with someone whom you do not know. The thought is simply creepy.

Amidst all this confusion you, may wonder what alternatives you have. But have you given a thought to ballroom dancing on DVD online. You should make sure you view the videos from the professional dance instructors who have been accredited and also have proof of wining some serious numbers of choreographed accolades. They should also have a celebrity list and must have been shown in a reality show that was nationally televised. That is a secret you should let me in on.

There is this guy that is getting into the fourth season of Dancing with the stars. Currently he has a dance partner called Priscilla Presley who has number of won world championships. He previously danced with partners like Trista Sutter, Lisa Rina and Monique Coleman in the three seasons of the Dancing with the Stars before. I will let you know about it all.

The person I am referring to is Louis van Amstel. Louis van Amstel recently released some video sets on learning eight dances that were featured when the Dancing With Stars was being taped and were named Louis Let’s Dance. In it, Van Amstel illustrates how to dance Jive, Salsa, ChaCha, Tango, Rhumba, Foxtrot and Samba

Louis has received a prominent featuring in the first to the third and the sixth seasons of Dancing with the Stars which is considered to be a phenomenon in the pop culture in both the United States and abroad. In addition, Louis has choreographed in a number of group performances that are viewed in the seven seasons of Dancing with the Stars. The show’s success has made Louis serve in the capacity of a choreographer, performer and creative director in the touring shows of Dancing with the Stars that has been performing in cities in Canada and the United States. Recently, I tried to learn ChaCha from Louis Let’s Dance together with my girlfriend. I was shocked at the audio and video download quality. My expectations as a world class dancer of the ballroom were no doubt high but exact detail met them in the video; making me admit to the fact that ballroom dancing on DVD online can actually be effective.

There are various dancing steps to use in ballroom dancing.

There are basic types of vocabulary of the ballroom dance steps. In most occasions, dance instructors use terms like coaster steps and triple steps without taking into account of the fact that as a beginner, you may not have an idea of what these words mean. There are almost twelve steps that are well explained in the video. There are some free stream videos found in the current series we have that cover some other ballroom dancing step basics like foot positions, the techniques of turning, dance terms for exhibition and dance holds.

Definitions of Ballroom Video Script and The Ballroom Dancing Steps
Triple Step-These steps are common especially in swing dancing. It involves a sequence of three steps taken on the basis of two music beats. For instance, when the first step in the triple step is done on the first count, the second step made is usually taken at a half beat and within the first and second counts. The third step is then taken at the second count. This type of step counting is referred to as one and two counting. Normally, triple steps have two fast steps followed by a slow step referred to as quick-quick-slow or one can simply use the numbers one and two

Rock Step- The rock step involves a two step sequence. The timing of the steps is usually called out as slow-slow

The basic East Coast Swing –This is the combination that involves 2 triple steps followed by a rock step. Together they are able to form the east coast or triple timing basic step type of swing. The timing of the steps is one and two, five and six, three and four.

Ball-Change – In this type of swing’s ballroom dancing steps, there is a sequence that involves two steps known as ball change. The weight that is exerted on the foot’s ball is transferred to the other remaining foot.

Kick Ball Change –This swing is quite a popular dance step and involves the kick-ball-change in taking the step. It can also be used in replacing rock step. The timing is generally placed at one and two.

The Basic Step of the Carolina Shag – This is a combination of ballroom dance steps of 2 triple steps and it also comprises of a change in kick ball normally used in the swing dances that have triple timing swings like the Carolina shag.

Coaster Step – This step involves back-together-forward triple step that is danced to one and two timing or alternatively a quick, quick, slow timing.

Sailor Step – This type of ballroom dance steps has got a side to side look. It consists of a one and two timing and is a triple step dance .It can be accomplished if one leans to wards the opposite direction at the foot which is crossing.

Anchor Step – This is a stationary type of triple dance that is danced when one is on the positioning of the third foot. The dance timing is at one and two. This dance step is famous in the west coast swing.

Grapevine – This is a type of the ballroom dance steps that involves a continuous travelling in the step pattern. This is done towards the side that normally has alternating crosses at the front and behind of the foot being used for support.

Lock Step – This is a triple step timing dance. When the step is being taken, the lower sections of the legs are made to cross in such a manner that the back legs are locked behind the leg leading. This is done in a manner that the leading leg is able to move forward. This type of step in most cases is used in the Cha Cha triple step type of ballroom dance steps.

What are the Popular Dances in the 1940′s?

Though it is hard to believe, it is true that some of the popular dances in the 1940’s were spread by servicemen. The period between 1942 and 1945 saw more than 1.5 million American servicemen arrive in Britain. Having not met or heard an American speak, the arrival of the Americans or Yanks at the peak of the Second World War was a great culture shock for most British people.

The Americans came along with completely new approaches to life. Compared to the British, the Americans were more easy-going and casual. They chewed gum, had crew cuts and swaggered when they walked. Catch-words and phrases that the Americans used were viewed as strange by the British. Since they earned seven times more than their British counterparts, the GI’s or Americans tended to be more generous. They came along with luxuries such as candy, fruit and nylon stockings that had been scarce since the war started- these they generously gave to young British women and to their families.

Most importantly, the GI’s brought a new dancing style. This popular dance in the 1940’s was referred to as the Jitterbug. This was an acrobatic and wild jive that made ballroom dances that were popular then such as foxtrot and waltz, appear rather boring and old fashioned.

It is obvious with their charm, outlandish life and good looks the GI’s were much more admired by the British women. However, not everyone in Britain liked them. Many Britons found them showy and loud and conventional British dance halls owners were appalled at the Jitterbug; even its name sounded improper. It did not take a long time for “No Jitterbugging” signs to appear. However, this was not strong enough to stop the Jitterbug’s craze from spreading and in most cases people ignored the signs.

At that time, dancing formed an essential part of the country’s social culture. Everyone danced and the dance halls became focal points where people met, had fun and socialized. The new dance was loved by young people particularly young women who spent hours in munitions factories or in other way participating in the war effort. The dance enabled them to forget the hardships caused by the war and to let their hair down- even if it was for a while.

With the defeat of the Nazi Germany in 1945, the Americans returned home though not alone. About fifty thousand British women went along with them to America as GI brides and started new homes there. The dance, Jitterbug though did not go along with them but kept on being danced in various parts of Britain. With time the Jitterbug, one of the popular dances in the 1940’s became less energetic and wild and went on to became rock’n’roll.

Ballroom dance posture is very basic and fundamental skill a ballroom dancer should learn at the very beginning.

Posture in scientific layman terms is the way we carry our bodies! Posture is very important in ballroom dancing. In fact, good posture leads to self-confidence, which is a major requirement of ballroom dancing!

So what exactly do we mean by good posture? Good posture is merely the practice of keeping the body straight, by keeping the spinal column upright! When we say, ‘Stand straight’, we mean don’t slouch and keep your posture firm!

Here are a few guidelines to having a good posture for ballroom dancing.

1. Lower Body: While the lower body consisting of the legs, knees, ankles and feet are by nature, permanently set into position, it is important that you keep your feet together and improve upon your balance and your centre of gravity. Thus, having more weight balanced on your inner feet will directly lead to an improvement in posture.

2. Hips and Pelvis: Many a times, your coach will tell you to tuck in your tush! He’s not being insulting, he’s merely trying to get you to improve your posture! Tucking in your hips and bringing them in line with your back will enhance your posture by a lot! And when you dance with this posture, you’re definitely going to get more thigh tone and reduced cellulite!

3. Spine: Always, always try to increase the length of your spine! Try to keep the spinal column long and straight. You can do this by standing (not leaning) against a wall with only your heels, shoulders and the back part of your head in contact with the wall. Also, if you would like to improve your posture when walking, try keeping a flat object such as a book on your head and walking, making sure that the book does not fall!

And remember, always keep your neck straight and your head up. Don’t be afraid to make eye-contact with people, but don’t be too arrogant either! Have a good smile for a good day!

Many people have constantly asked this question; how does dancing affect the mind? Dancing is extremely useful when it comes to maintaining people’s age because it slows down aging processes.
In the issue of how dancing affects the mind, dancing helps in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis that is a main issue in females particularly when they are in their post-menopause periods. In fact, there are major drops in the level of estrogen that take place at menopause. Minimal levels of estrogen are the determining factors that bar bones from absorbing calcium. Aside from that, dace keeps joints lubricated as well, preventing arthritis.

Ladies like a guy who leads well, without pulling, pushing or tugging them all over the dance floor! In fact, to lead properly, a gentleman must always be strong, and by strong here, I mean that he must always ensure that he keeps his dancing stance firm and his lady comfortable! By keeping to one dance position, you will not only get the interest and respect of the lady you dance with, you’ll also have plenty of other women wanting to dance with you!

Men, on the other hand, hate being led! They go where they want to go, and if they’re not leading, this will cause a lot of friction between the dancing couple! As a dancing instructor for the last four decades, I can tell you that the most important factor that makes a dancing couple gel is their ability to understand and accept who leads and who follows!

Women are more likely to be pursued for dancing if they have the ability to follow a lead well, and go where their partner wants them to without being clumsy and stumbling! If you can do so, you’ll have a dance relationship that’s as enjoyable as it is perfect! This is when the dancing as one concept comes in, which is vastly more satisfying and fun than being two people who are doing the same steps. In fact, dancing as one is essential for doing some dances such as the Salsa and the Waltz!

The connection forming between the dance partner is enough to make things sizzle on the dance floor. NOT true! Here are three main requirements for you to dance as one and sizzle on the dance floor! These are:

Every step that the two of you make should be of the same size.

Move at the same tempo. One should not be faster than the other!

Move in the same direction. This is a very important concept for the follower to understand, more so than the leader!

So now you have my secrets! Go ahead and start grooving!

So you think you’re all set to get out there and dance? Well, before you do so, keep the military paraphernalia away. You sure won’t require them here! The important things you need to know out on the dance floor are these:

How to take cover in the crowd!

Beginners are always, always filled with nervousness. Don’t worry, it’s a universal thing! If you want to remain hidden while you try out your first dance, here is one important guideline: Always stick to the middle of the dance floor! The outer edges of the dance floor are for experienced dancers who are comfortable with being stared at, and the middle enables you to move at your own pace with no hassles or stares from anyone!

The Universally Recognized Dance Panic Signal
The chances of collision on the dance floor are quite high, especially when said dance floor is crowded. Many a time, the leader of the dance will be leading you into the path of another couple, in which case, it is your duty to tap him on the shoulder as a precaution of oncoming collision! You may want to scream ‘Watch Out!’ but this is never a good idea, and you will definitely end up embarrassing yourself and your partner if you do it!

In a Jam? March!
If you’ve ever found yourself in a weird spot on the dance floor, you’ll know what I’m talking about! Perhaps you can make no sense of the rhythm of the music playing, or your partner hasn’t a clue about how the Cha-Cha varies from the waltz. In any case, here’s what you do: March! The ‘quick’ rhythm we discussed before, where you go ‘quick, quick, quick, quick’ or ‘march, two, three, four’ will come to your rescue every time! Simple steps, moving your body to the rhythm, and you’re sorted!
